One Phone Setting That Boosted My Focus
The One Setting That Changed Everything
Hey friend,
Like I always say — I don’t want to advise you on anything.
I just share my struggles.
And what I’m doing (or have done) to get through them.
Why don’t I give advice?
Because I’m just like you.
I’m no genius.
I’m no productivity guru.
I haven’t made my first million (yet 😜).
But after five years of working as a remote employee —
mostly from home — I’ve learned a thing or two.
If I share my story, maybe it can help you too.
Today, I want to tell you about one small change I made —
It sounds so small, but honestly?
It’s one of the most powerful things I’ve ever done.
It was so big, it made me feel like:
“I’ve done something great.”
“I’ve finally done a big favor for myself.”
“Now I can go after whatever I want.”
What is it?
I turned off my phone notifications.
Yep. That’s it!
I know it might sound small.
But it wasn’t small for me.
I resisted it for days.
I kept thinking:
“What if I miss something important?”
“What if I miss something exciting?”
But then I did it.
And guess what?
Nothing happened.
Nothing went wrong.
Life went on.
And I was like… wait, why is everything still okay?
It shouldn’t be! 😂
But the truth?
I feel more independent.
More clear-headed.
More in control.
All because of this one simple decision.
It’s been almost a year now, and I swear —
half of my calmness and focus comes from this one thing.
Turning off notifications sounds simple.
But doing it?
Not so simple.
Not for most people.
It almost feels like there’s an invisible force holding you back.
Maybe it’s not a big deal for you.
But for me — and for many people — it was a game-changer. 😇
And to be clear: I didn’t block everything.
I still allow notifications from:
WhatsApp
Gmail
Calendar
My Todo App
Bank Apps
That’s it.
I’m still getting the important stuff.
No compromise on this.
What about chats?
Most people message me on Messenger.
Since I blocked Messenger notifications, I just tell them:
“Hey, my notifications are off — if it’s important, ping me on WhatsApp.”
It’s a filter.
A soft boundary.
And honestly, it works!
Because this isn’t just an ADHD problem.
It’s a worldwide problem.
Everyone’s brain is getting hijacked by tiny pings.
This one setting helped me take mine back.
When I install a new app on my phone,
I check its importance — and then decide if it deserves notification access
So, what should you take from this story of mine?
If your notifications are on for every app —
Turn them off.
Immediately.
Don’t overthink it.
Why am I sounding bossy here?
Because, honestly, no one needs to keep notifications on for everything.
I mean, are you insane? Why!?
ADHD or not, this is a modern-day problem.
So just turn them off. Now.
Or at least — after reading this issue:
Keep only the important ones on
Wait 24 hours
See what you missed
Then re-enable what truly matters
Don’t let big corporations exploit your attention.
Let me know how it goes. I read every reply. 📩
Until next time,
— Ali
